Injury & Return to Play
Injury & Return to Play
HEO follows Hockey Canada’s Six-Step method for return to play for Concussion in Sport. When a potential concussion has occurred, the team trainer will be the first point of contact with the injured player. The trainer will evaluate the player in question, using appropriate protocols and will make a determination based on their assessment of the player. If the trainer determines that the player may be concussed or is showing symptoms of possible concussion, then they
will
deem that player
unfit to play
until assessed by a physician. No player can return to play until the attending physician has given the player clearance to do so in writing. The trainer’s decision is final and cannot be overturned by coaching staff or parents until the above-mentioned criteria has been met.
Concussion Return to Play Policy (
HEO 6.12
)
Concussion Card (
HEO 6.12.1
)
HEO defines Significant Injury as any injury that a player sustains (except Concussion) that requires the player to be absent from hockey for a period of greater than one week. This can include (but is not limited to) broken bones, severe sprains or strains, major lacerations, respiratory incidents, etc. The team trainer will be kept apprised of all changes in the player’s condition and the player
will
be deemed
unfit to play
until assessed by a physician. No player can return to play until the attending physician has given the player clearance to do so in writing. The trainer’s decision is final and cannot be overturned by coaching staff or parents until the Return to Play criteria has been met.
Significant Injury Return to Play Policy (
HEO 6.30
)
Every team manager should also maintain a player injury log (link below) that documents each time:
A player is removed for the remainder of a game due to an injury sustained during play.
A player is injured during a practice whether on or off ice.
A player is forced to leave a game or practice for unknown medical reasons.
A player is injured during a hockey-related event.
If an injury requires medical referral and/or hospitalization, a Hockey Canada Injury Report Form (
link
) should be completed.
